Frequently Asked Questions

For most taxpayers, the deadline to file federal and New York State tax returns is typically April 15th. If this day falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

The IRS usually issues refunds in less than 21 calendar days after they receive and process your return electronically. Filing electronically (e-filing) and choosing direct deposit is the fastest way to get your money. Freedom Tax Zone provides same-day electronic filing to help speed up this process.

You can file for an automatic extension using Form 4868 by the original deadline. This gives you until October 15th to submit your return. Important: An extension to file is NOT an extension to pay any taxes you owe.

The two main breaks are the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), which is refundable and usually for the first four years of college, and the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) which covers a broader range of educational pursuits but is not refundable.

You may be able to deduct up to $2,500 of the interest paid on qualified student loans. This is an "above-the-line" deduction, meaning it reduces your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) and the amount of income that is subject to tax.

Yes, the Clean Vehicle Credit provides a tax credit for purchasing new or used electric vehicles that meet specific manufacturing and component sourcing requirements.

The Child Tax Credit provides up to $2,200 per qualifying child under the age of 17. A portion of this credit is "refundable," meaning it can increase your tax refund even if you don't owe any taxes.

Unfortunately, if the child turned 17 at any point during the 2025 calendar year, they no longer qualify for the $2,200 CTC. Still, you might still be able to claim a smaller $500 Credit for Other Dependents for them.
